When I went to school I liked the craft classes where they gave us the opportunity to create clay shapes, sculptures like ashtrays, vases and even decorative glasses. Since then I have always found everything that has to do with ceramic figures very attractive and that is why the topic that I want to talk about today has to do with ceramic figures, but with something that makes it different, they are 3D figures.
The Eindhoven design academy has recently added a department on food that deals with tasks of creative minds to tackle the major problems of industrialization and animal welfare and obesity. During design week in Milan 2015, the Eindhoven design academy presented «eat shit»As a public laboratory composed of the work of the department of the academy. There were 18 students and teachers who presented their research and results, something that shows innovation and how art can contribute to a new approach to eating.
Presented by this part of the project «eat shit" It was Olivier Van Herpt who showed his ceramic 3D printer with a saturation of rapid prototyping solutions has developed a new technique for 3D printing support and also to get large ceramic figures. By altering the 3D printer's settings, they have created a series of clay pieces, including a woven 3D collection and a sediment collection.
The artist showed the limitations of the 3D printing technology and presented the machine as well as the process that made possible the large-scale, ceramic and 3D printing of the objects.
Van Herpt spent two years designing his printer to be able to move with this particular pattern, but also to be able to print with clay. It is simply impressive. What do you think of the ceramic figures? Would you decorate your house with any of them?
