Syros, in the heart of the Aegean
But before delving into the discovery of these movie houses, let's stop to get to know their surroundings. The island of Syros is located in the heart of the Aegean Sea, in the epicenter of the Cyclades archipelago. A destination often unfairly ignored in the usual voyages of cruises through the Greek islands.
This tiny Greek corner barely has an area of 84 square kilometers and a population of 22.000 inhabitants. Syros houses beautiful beaches such as Kini, Galissas and Megas Gyalos, as well as charming coastal towns such as Hermoupolis, the small and beautiful island capital, where we find charming white churches, restaurants full of local delicacies and small charming shops.
A holiday in Syros gives us the opportunity to discover the most authentic charm of the Greek islands, away from the tourist crowds. An opportunity to enjoy unique landscapes and approach the most genuine traditions.
Block722 is an architecture studio founded in 2009 by the architect Sotiris Tsergas and the interior designer Katja Margaritoglou in the capital of Greece, Athens. The fruit of his labor is the result of a combination of styles: clean and simple Scandinavian lines with Greek tradition and charm.
The studio is in charge of numerous and varied jobs, carrying out the management of all stages of architectural development, from conceptual design to construction. Among its distinctive features, we must highlight the use of quality materials, the collaboration with master craftsmen and artists, as well as the respect for Mediterranean traditions.
This work philosophy has earned Block722 to receive numerous awards such as the 2021 Special Mention of the A+Firm Awards Best of Year-Europe. But without a doubt, his best cover letter is his work. Like the two that we bring you here, which we could include in any list of the most beautiful houses in the Greek islands:
Villa Syros II
Although it cannot be seen in all its splendor in the images, this villa proudly exhibits the characteristics of Cycladic architecture, blending into the landscape and using genuine materials such as local stone.
The villa Syros II offers magnificent views over the bay of Plagia. The construction consists of a main house plus four other annexes for guests, each of them with a different configuration and private independent entrance.
The outdoor area follows the topography of the landscape naturally. This defines the shape and aesthetics of the outdoor areas, equipped with large spaces dedicated to relaxation and leisure. Always with spectacular sea views.
Space interior It is 300 m² and is decorated in a style halfway between modern and traditional. In these summer houses there is no lack of furniture, but neither is it left over. Especially beautiful are the rustic wood furniture from the kitchen, matched are the stone countertops.
The same can be said of the right combination of colors: grey, earth, white... Details that shine with a special shine in the bedrooms. All in all, it draws a simply charming picture, between the nordic and the Mediterranean. One could perfectly adapt to living in a place like this, don't you think?
Villa Syros III
In contrast to the previous (and neighboring) residence, the villa Syro II it is completely subject to the whims of the natural environment that surrounds it. But that is not a disadvantage, but an opportunity that the architects of Block722 used in their favor to create a unique and spectacular design. One of the most remarkable examples of what houses on the Greek islands can represent in terms of design and style.
The entrance is located at the top of the house, thus intensifying the experience of the Cycladic landscape by giving the visitor a wide view of the Aegean. there is a clear contrast between the clean and geometric volumes of the common areas (living room, kitchen) and the irregular shapes of the bedrooms.
The guest house appears "buried" within the hillside, with its boundaries well defined by a stone wall that is typical of the local architecture.. The common outdoor spaces consist of two open patios protected from the sun. Always, yes, with the immensity of the sea as background scenery.
In the interiors, white walls and large windows fill every corner of every room with light. As for the style, it is sober and rustic, without falling into the error of adding furniture and accessories in excess. All the prominence is for the white color, the bare stone and the warmth of the wood. Elements that give rise to cozy and quiet environments, atmospheres that invite rest and happiness.
Both one and the other town are two examples of the beauty exhibited by the houses on the greek islandsespecially when built scratch, bringing together the best of the Aegean tradition but doing without its limitations and inconveniences.
These two great examples are just a small sample of what Block722 has designed in other parts of the Aegean. You will find more dream villas and fabulous corners on their website. A great place to dream, but also to find new decoration ideas.
