Rocking chairs with double function

Murakami Rocking Chair, design by Rochus Jacob

Rocking chairs make a strong return to the world of decoration, whether in their classic turned wood version or in contemporary models that improve comfort and soften their shapes; but they also proliferate in hybrid format combining two or more functions, becoming multifunctional and creative pieces. Let's see some examples:

American designer Rochus Jacob was looking for a way natural to generate electricity and that it was rewarding. From that idea arose the Murakami rocking chair, a design with simple lines that with the advanced technology of a nano-dynamo integrated in the skates of the chair makes the lamp turn on by swinging. When starting the battery, the organic OLED diodes inserted inside the screen are charged, which is the light emitting source itself, without the need for a light bulb.

Another model of rocking chair with double function is the Motion Bookshelf Rocking chair by Hyunjin Seo for the firm KamKam, which can be use as a library. Its wheel shape facilitates movement when we lie down on it and the position of the legs helps improve circulation; at the same time it serves as a standard seat for reading and we can always have books and magazines at hand by extending our arm a little. It is true that this highly sculptural design takes up too much space for a conventional home, but there are similar alternatives such as the Dondola rocking chair-shelf by Pucci de Rossi, smaller and equally stylish in its metallic finish:

Inverso model seat, by the Portuguese designer Luís Pórem

As for the outdoor options, this two-in-one seat by Portuguese designer Luís Pórem is defined by its own name: «Inverso» is a rocking chair with steel tube arms and wooden slats that transforms into a fixed dining chair when we turn it over. Perfect for tables in the garden that can be lengthened, where each diner can freely choose the position according to the moment.

As on other occasions, we could not forget the children, who will pleasantly enjoy this piece from the 50s, proving that sometimes it is important to look to the past to create the toys of the future: The Shaukelwagen car design consists of a double semicircle and a molded beech seat with wheels, which when turned 180 degrees turns into a fun swing-style rocking chair.

I like the double utility of these rocking chairs, although in some of them I would surely not know how to sit
