How to decorate furniture with decoupage

Decoupage

You probably already know decoupage technique at this point, and it has become one of the most used in DIY projects with furniture. It is basically about applying paper or fabrics on surfaces to give them a totally new and original touch.

This type of technique is quite simple, and if it is done carefully the finish will be perfect, so much so that it will not be noticed that they are images. The better integrated they are in the furniture, the more realistic it will be. Today we will tell you the step by step to be able to do the decoupage on any surface, although above all it is used on furniture to renew them.

The first thing to do is to have good work surface prepared. If it is a wooden furniture it must be sanded well, and if it is another surface it will have to be cleaned so that it is smooth and perfect to start the work. Once it is prepared, you have to apply the glue, which should be lightened with a little water, so that it is less thick, taking care that there are no lumps.

Decoupage

Once we have the glue on the surface, you have to apply the paper or fabrics. If it is very thin paper, it will be easier to integrate it, and you will need few layers of glue. It should be applied with a brush so that there are no folds. When finished, let it dry for several hours and give one or more coats of varnish or lacquer for the finish. Finally, you have to let it dry for four hours so that it is completely dry.

For the finish to be perfect you have to sand the edges and apply glue and varnish again. This is so that they are without lumps or shapes. This technique can be mixed with others to give an even more original finish, such as crackle or aged, for furniture that is totally different from what you currently have.
