How to paint kitchen tiles

Kitchen tiles

On many occasions we have talked to you about some ways to change the appearance and decoration of a space without spending too much. One of the low cost ideas that can most renovate a room is to paint it with a new color that gives everything a different and new touch. In this case we are talking about kitchen tiles, which can also be painted with a new color to give them that touch of renovation that they need.

We will tell you which paintings to choose, because it is not a normal wall painting, but a special for tiles with special characteristics for this area. It should be a more resistant paint, and we also have a wide range of colors to choose from to repaint the kitchen tiles. If these have already gone out of style, it's time to give them a twist to re-see the kitchen as a new place.

Choosing your tile paint

In stores we can find specific paint for tiles. This paint has a harder and more elastic finish than normal wall paints. These enamels must be resistant to water, grease and daily cleaning, as they are found in the kitchen area. Among them we can find from matte to satin finishes and those with gloss. If we want to cover imperfections, mattes are recommended, as they highlight them much less. And among these there will always be a wide range of different colors to choose from and combine in the kitchen.

There are two types of enamels in addition to the previous selection that referred to the finish. We refer to enamels a water-based and oil-based enamels. The ones that are water-based are acrylics and the others are called synthetic enamels. The water ones are more respectful with the environment and are cleaned with soap and water, although they are a little less resistant than the previous ones, but they do not yellow over time. The oil-based ones are more resistant and more recommended for areas such as the kitchen, since the cleaning is constant, and they have a brighter finish. Undoubtedly the latter are the most chosen for a place like the kitchen.

Clean and prepare the area

Clean tiles

One of the things we must do is clean the tiles well and prepare the area. These kitchen tiles usually have traces of grease, so we must clean all the gaps and corners very well so that nothing remains, so that the paint is well impregnated in them. Special care must be taken in the joints, which is where dirt can accumulate the most. Dry well and then prepare the area so as not to stain paint on the furniture and around the tiles. Put plastic protectors that are bought in the paint stores and masking tape so that nothing moves and delimit the corners. In this way we can paint without being afraid of damaging any furniture or corner.

Painting supplies

When painting it is usually applied with small roller or with a spray, since the finish is very good with the paint guns, without grooves. With short-haired rollers a good finish is also achieved, although little paint needs to be applied or there may be drips or grooves. Masking tape and plastic are used to protect and in case of using spray paint it is better to use a mask so as not to inhale the paint and leave a good ventilation in the kitchen.

Paint the tiles

It's time to paint the tiles. Normally we will only apply one not very thick layer on the tiles, covering and spreading well. As we say, with the spray gun the finish is perfect, although you should also practice a little before on a surface to know how to apply it. If the result is as expected, we just have to wait for it to dry. It is better to paint on dry and hot days, as the paint dries before, and we must leave windows open for ventilation.

After painting

When it has completely dried, we just have to remove the plastic and the tape. If we want the durability to be greater and also have a more satin finish, we can add a protector over the paint. Without removing the tape, we would simply apply in the same way on the already dry paint. This guarantees that the paint lasts longer, something very important in an area like the kitchen, where the tiles have a great wear and tear from cleaning products. We would let it dry completely and when it was dry we would remove the tape and plastic and finally we would place everything as before. We would already have our kitchen tiles with a totally new look.
