Instructions on how to paint a piece of furniture

Painting furniture

Surely many of us have in our house some of that furniture that we see that it has become outdated, and that we want to take advantage of by renewing its appearance. You don't have to be a craft expert to paint a piece of furniture, since it is a fairly simple process. In the case of painting a piece of furniture, we must take into account the material in which it is made, although the process is similar.

Today we are going to tell you how to paint a piece of furniture, but we are going to distinguish between wooden, melamine and metal furniture, since they are different materials and have different needs. Of course, it is a quick and inexpensive way to give new life to furniture that we have with an obsolete and old-fashioned look.

Painting wooden furniture

This will be the process perform more regularly, since it is in many homes where you want to give a new touch to old wooden furniture. These are beautifully designed but are often outdated with their dark wood tones and varnish. So it's a great idea to refresh them with a coat of paint.

The first thing to do in this case is sand well to remove all traces of varnish that we have or from previous paintings so that the wood is bare. Then we will clean well with a damp cloth so as not to leave any remaining dust on the surface and we will let it dry completely. When it is dry and clean, it is time to add a coat of primer to the furniture. With this layer, the wood will be protected and the enamel will last much longer. Let it dry and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Today there are many paints that already have this sealing layer incorporated to save us this step and thus be able to paint directly.

Before painting it must be sanded gently so that the surface is even after sealer layer. Now is when we must apply the paint, and we can do it with a small foam roller, with a spray gun or with a brush. With the brush the brushstrokes are noticeable and it gives a more informal look. The roller is easy to use and the finish is the same, but in the corners we will need small brushes for the finishes, and the gun leaves a perfect finish but we may have to practice using it first.

When choose the enamelsWe can choose water-based enamels, specific for wood, since there are them for metals and for walls and the effect would not be the same. Those that are based on water are not toxic and therefore are ideal when we have to paint in closed spaces.

Painting melamine furniture

These melamine furniture came to replace wooden furniture because they are much cheaper, although certainly less durable. They are furniture that is made with pressings and sheets, and that in general do not usually last decades. However, at some point we may want to give this furniture a new look to adapt it to a new decoration in the home.

The process has been very similar to that of wooden furniture, since we must also sand lightly to shine it up that these furniture usually have, clean and then use a coat of primer to seal and to fix the paint. We must use sandpaper after priming, as well as after each coat of paint that we use so that the finish is perfect. As with wooden furniture, the most common thing is to need two coats of paint so that the color of the furniture looks good.

Painting metal furniture

Paint metal furniture

In the case of metal furniture, we must clean first to remove furniture dirt and dust. If there is peeling paint or imperfections, we will have to sand lightly to leave the surface smooth. In the paint store, we must choose a paint that is special for metals, since one that is wood or water-based will not work. Metal paints have substances that prevent them from rusting or corroding with water. These paints are spray paints and there are many colors. We must protect the space to apply with the aerosol, covering the bottom and the floor.

You must first apply a base paint that makes the colors uniform. In this way, after this first base, we can apply the color we want and that looks good on the surface. This is important especially if we have furniture that is painted in dark tones, since by interfering they can make the final color look different. In this case we must apply the base and wait for it to dry. Thin layers of paint should be sprayed by moving the container from one side to the other, at a distance. The container usually already sets the time that we must allow that type of paint to dry.
