Mies van der Rohe: architect and furniture designer

Yesterday, March 27, 2012, the 126 years of the birth of a great architect in history were celebrated, Mies van der Rohe. A great creator who has greatly influenced later architecture and who has left a legacy to this day.

Perhaps in the world of decoration it is better known than for its architecture, for its famous furniture design, an example is the Barceclona chair, which has become a staple in any modern decor. A chair that was created by Mies for his famous Barcelona Pavilion and that over the years has not changed in its shape or materials. Being created in steel and leather like the original. Nowadays, this great piece can be purchased under the signature of van der Rohe that is accompanied by the Knoll logo printed on the box that is to whom the record belongs.

I would like to make a short biography of Mies van der Rohe to better understand its architecture and the reason for its characteristic furniture designs:

He was born in Aachen, Germany, and already in his teens he worked with a great architect Peter Behrens, with whom he began his first steps and made his first contact with architecture.

During the first decade of 1900 he built the Wolf house or the Hermann Lange house, but his fame came with the creation and design in 1929 of the German National Pavilion for the International Exhibition of Barcelona , known as the Barcelona Pavilion.

At this time he will be influenced by the different avant-gardes that are developing in Europe such as the neoplasticist movement that will be seen in his designs.

Around 1933 he moved to the United States where he would continue his architectural creation where, for example, he would remodel the faculty of architecture of the Illinois Technology Institute in Chigago and where he would create one of his key works, the farnsworth house (1950)
