Plastering with Tadelakt, an ancient technique that returns 1

Tadelakt stucco bedroom wall

The stucco in Tadelakt is a coating technique with thousands of years old that nevertheless has been acquiring followers in the last decades due to its multiple virtues and possibilities. Usually used in the old palaces of the sultans or the current hamman Turkish and Moroccan baths, it is a very ductile material that can be applied on any surface both indoors and outdoors, it is resistant to water but at the same time very permeable and has aseptic qualities.

Its basic element is a very fine type of lime, which is mixed with water and left to settle until a paste is formed that is distributed evenly in the same direction, to then be polished in circles using a river stone (although Currently there are also special waxes to achieve this effect).

Every craftsman can get very different results playing with texture and undulations, although in general Tadelakt is used to obtain finishes of great softness and deep colors, which curiously gain in beauty with the passage of time. In this video we can appreciate the applied technique (it is in German, but the process is perfectly understood):

Although the most conventional use of Tadelakt is usually done on a wall, it is possible to stucco any type of surface as long as it is smooth; in this room we see a soil unconventional, made on cement with a beautiful and vibrant finish; in addition, the stucco extends over the structure of the sofa and the plinth that decorates the lower part of the wall, creating a sense of continuity and a relaxing and pleasant atmosphere.

You can even use this technique to delimit different heights and separate environments by applying it on the steps. Although it is durable and extremely resistant, the Tadelakt requires sporadic but essential maintenance to maintain its shine and quality; thus, in humid areas such as the bathroom, the surfaces must be covered with a special black soap, and in dry rooms such as the living room, they must be nourished with wax.
